Impotence Drug Options

Many impotence drug options are available for men who are suffering from impotence problems.

Choosing the Right Medication

The right medication will depend on how the drug needs to work on the cause of the impotence. Your doctor will best understand how impotence drugs work so a trip to the doctor is the first order of business when an impotence problem is suspected. There are several different types of medications which can be used to help with the various causes of impotence:

  • PDE5, which is a form of phophodiesterase – These drugs help the arteries of the muscle to smooth out so they can relax and allow for normal blood flow. This group of drugs includes Viagra, Levitra, and Cialis.
  • Alprostadil and Androskat – These are drugs which are injected into the penis right before sexual intercourse to help increase blood flow.
  • Penis pump – This is also known as vacuum therapy and requires a man to place their penis into a pump in order to stimulate blood flow before intercourse.

Some men might also choose surgery if there is a physical problem which needs to be fixed. These surgeries can install devices which will pull the penis into an upright position, or the surgeries can increase the blood flow in the vessels by widening them.

ED Drug Warnings

The impotence medications work primarily to enhance blood flow in the body. When blood flow is increased, it might be difficult to release the blood once more. Some men may have extended erections of more than four hours, causing pain and discomfort. In those cases, the patient may need to see a doctor to remove the excessive blood.

In other cases, those with heart conditions may not be able to take impotence drugs as they can interact and cause significant health problems. Always discuss your current health and prescriptions before starting a new prescription drug regimen.
