What Is Impotence?

What is impotence? Impotence is a condition in which erections and ejaculation are compromised in some way.

Diagnosing the Problem of Impotence

While impotence is a highly treatable condition, many men will wait until they’ve had the problem for a long time before seeking treatment. But this can often delay a cure or allow long term damage to occur. Whether you’ve suffered from a bout of impotence yet or not, knowing the signs will allow you to get the treatment you need before the issue becomes difficult to fix.

The most common signs you might need treatment for impotence include:

  • Difficulty maintaining an erection – When a man can not sustain an erection during sexual intercourse, this is erectile dysfunction.
  • Difficulty creating a hard erection – If the man is unable to create an erection which is full or rigid, this is the sign of a problem.
  • Difficulty creating erections when awake – Having erections at night (“wet dreams”) is a signal that the man is physically able to have an erection, but not having them during the day means something else is preventing the process.

Impotence is defined as being a problem when it occurs more times than once and it occurs enough times that it begins to affect the sexual life and pleasure of the male and their partner. Even if the cause of the impotence is stress, if the erectile dysfunction does not resolve on its own, a patient needs to seek medical advice.
